    Controller

    Location: Blue Island, IL

    Compensation: up to $130,000 + Performance Bonus

    Opportunity Overview

    A financially strong, privately owned scrap recycling company — recognized as a Top 3 provider within its niche in the state — is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead accounting and financial operations.

    This organization has built a reputation for operational excellence, consistent growth, and disciplined financial management. The Controller will play a critical leadership role, partnering directly with ownership to enhance reporting, strengthen controls, and support strategic decision-making as the company continues to scale.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Leadership

    1. Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
    2. Deliver accurate, GAAP-compliant financial statements and executive reporting packages.
    3. Provide analysis on margins, purchasing trends, commodity impacts, and operational performance.
    4. Present financial insights that support data-driven decision-making.



    Accounting Operations

    1. Oversee the full accounting function, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and fixed assets.
    2. Ensure accurate inventory valuation across metal grades, work-in-process, and finished goods.
    3. Maintain disciplined cost accounting practices tied to commodity flows.
    4. Optimize workflows within QuickBooks while identifying opportunities for automation.


    Controls & Compliance

    1. Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets.
    2. Partner with external CPA advisors on tax filings, year-end reviews, and monthly financial reporting requests from lenders.
    3. Ensure compliance with regulatory and reporting requirements.


    Cash Flow & Planning

    1. Monitor liquidity and proactively manage cash flow.
    2. Build cash forecasts aligned with purchasing cycles and pricing volatility.
    3. Implement prudent fiscal management with a goal of reducing operational expenses over the next year.
    4. Support budgeting and forecasting processes.


    Operational Partnership

    1. Work closely with operations leadership to improve financial visibility across facilities.
    2. Evaluate capital expenditures, including equipment, fleet, and yard expansions.
    3. Recommend scalable processes to support continued growth.


    Leadership

    1. Lead and develop accounting staff.
    2. Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.


    Systems & Scalability

    1. Assess current financial infrastructure and recommend enhancements.
    2. Play a key role in any future ERP evaluation or implementation.



    Qualifications

    Required

    1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
    2. 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
    3. Leadership experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager
    4. Proficiency in QuickBooks
    5. Strong GAAP knowledge
    6. Advanced Excel skills


    Preferred

    1. CPA or CMA
    2. Experience in recycling, manufacturing, distribution, construction, logistics, or other industrial environments
    3. Background in inventory-intensive or commodity-driven businesses
